Energy Analyst

Energy Analyst performs statistical comparisons on a dataset of over 150,000 commercial and residential buildings from across the United States. Compare energy performance characteristics between similar buildings to find cost-saving energy efficiency improvements and assess the savings impact from these improvements. Add your own building or home information to see how your energy efficiency stacks up.

Acknowledgements

Energy Analyst uses the U.S. Department of Energy's Buildings Performance Database (https://bpd.lbl.gov/) and the database's programming interface to compare performance characteristics between similar buildings and to identify and prioritize cost-saving energy efficiency improvements. In addition, Energy Analyst supports adding your own home or building data to see how your energy efficiency compares. Energy Analyst allows users to add their own data through the Green Button Data Standard, a common format supported by many utility companies. By importing the Green Button files, users quickly see how their energy use compares to the rest of the country.

Please note that Energy Analyst has been developed independently and is not affiliated with the Department of Energy or any other government agency.

Getting Started

Here is an overview of the necessary steps to create an energy asset score for your building.

Step 1: Click the ‘New Building' button to begin; enter building name, location, conditioned floor area, and year of construction.

Step 2: Select all applicable use types (e.g., retail, office, education, multifamily, library).

Step 3: Create an Inventory of the Building's Features. Enter the building's envelope and assembly components (roofs, skylights, windows, walls, floors) and its major energy systems (HVAC, lighting fixtures, hot water systems).

Step 4: Create a 3-D Image of the Building. Create "blocks" to construct a 3-D image that approximates the building's geometry, configuration, and orientation.

Step 5: Apply Use Types and Components to Each Building Block. Click on each building block to ensure that the use types and features identified in Steps 2 and 3 have been correctly applied to the various building blocks. Make adjustments by dragging and dropping features over the applicable block as needed.

Step 6: Score your Building and review your Energy Asset Score Report. Select the Score Building button to generate an Energy Asset Score Report for your building. Review on-screen, or download/print a pdf file.

Note: Required fields in each of the data entry screens are indicated with a red star (*). If a non-required field is left blank, the tool will infer a value based on system type, vintage, and location.
